I have just bought a 25 hp long shaft Mariner because it was a steal. The only problem is my boat is set up for a short shaft. I was wondering what the best way to build up my transom is. Any input would be appreciated.

------------------
Mumford

Don't become a boat builder, Mumford. Get a minijacker from Cabelas or Overtons or BPS. It will raise your motor and set it back a few inches. Both good for quicker plane and higher top end without more gas.

Red Sky....
JB

Where are u located? I have a mariner 30 hp short shaft and my boat needs a long shaft.

What i did was i bought a jack plate from boaters world, the heavy duty 4 stroke model, and it lets me raise it all the way down 6" if i want to. Works great, set me back $220 bucks though.
-John

Thanks J.B. Do you have any idea how much a minijacker costs?

------------------
Mumford

friend of mine tried this, had aluminum bracket (1/4" plate) made that extended transom ht up about 10". It fit over the transom and was thru bolted. Had a welder at work make it for him for free. It looked great. It raised the tiller arm of the motor too high for comfortable steering. He sold me the motor and found a short shaft motor.

Re: help on building up my transom

Consider converting the outboard shaft length instead of the boat transom. It will look normal, and keep the center-of-gravity down. I just converted the shaft length on a 28hp Johnson, which were only made as long-shafts. I had do do a lot of looking, and maybe I got lucky finding an old place with buckets of old outboard parts that I had to pick through, but I removed the 5" lower housing spacer, and got the shorter shafts and tubes for less than $50. Most places would have wanted triple that, if they had the used parts, but compared to new, even that would have been worth it. Let me know if you want details.
