A while back I bought a boat with a chrysler outboard on it the guy I bought it from told me that it was a 55hp, the cover on it say 45hp and the model # is 351HH which tells me it is a 35hp when I bought the impeller I bought the one that fits the 35hp and the 45hp but when I ask for the thermostat I was infromed that the 35hp dose not have a thermostat also from what I have gathered it is a early 70's motor (one of the spark plug wire say 71 and the other 73)

So the motor has been running like crap so I have decided to dump some $ into her I have bought a tune up kit (part # 18-5013) I would also like to replace the coils. the coils might be good but they probly are 30 years old and I know the spark plug wires are that old From what I can tell I have replace the whole coil to replace the spark plug wires

So long story short can any help me find the right coils by the way I have the points and condenser set-up w/ NO alternator early 70's 45hp (maybe) If Any other info is needed please let me know
Thanks in Advanced
-Richard

Re: Help me find the right coil

Hello Lagoon bandit and welcome to Iboats. Your motor sounds like a Johny Cash song.
"I built it one piece at a time". The power head is from 1975 and most sites no longer sell parts that old. You can try HERE with a 76 motor however if they do still sell the parts they are $267 per coil/wire. You can try calling or email to www.tcoutboard.com or go to http://www.chryslercrew.com/ They have a chrysler chat on thursday nights and maybe someone there might have the parts you need.

Re: Help me find the right coil

when I go to the link under "HERE" If I look up 1976 and 45hp with model #451HH the coil that they show in the pic looks just like mine also so dose the flywheel and stator plate So I guess that would be the right one I will keep looking around to make sure

Also the flywheel on my motor has 2 spot for a magnet but only one is magnetic is this comon or did I lose a magnet ?
Once again that for the help

Re: Help me find the right coil

35 45 and 55 hp motors used a lot of similar parts including lower unit and ignition parts. Yours is a 35 however I am pretty sure the 45 ignition parts will work. I am not an expert on the ignition system but I believe on two strokes there is only one magnet on the flywheel. The other slot might be for a counter weight. This is just a guess. Hope someone with more knowledge will chime in on this.

Re: Help me find the right coil

Hi Bandit
It's been awhile since I've been on here. But the 35, 45 and 55 hp Chryslers had about 3 different type ignitions. If you have the points, condenser, coil type, then good luck finding the correct coil for a decent price. Does your engine have 2 coils mounted beteen the starter and the terminal strip? If so, then the coils made for the CD type ignition system WILL NOT work. The cheapest that I have found on the internet is about 90 bucks apeice, and you will need two of them. If this is the type ignition you have, then the spark plug wire can be changes seperatly. They just fit real tight to help keep water out.
What I did on an old 45 was to go to AutoZone and just get two 12 volt coils, I think they were for a 61 falcon, but any cheap coil wil work. You will also need what is called "Ballast resisters" to help from frying the coils. I got two coils and two resisters for less than $20. The problem now is where to put them. They are too big to fit the chryler brackets so I mounted them to the lower eng pan with clamps. Worked fine.
By the way, the resisters go on the + side of the coil, in line with the power wire.
