I sucessfully pulled the lower unit ( I thought)
The water pump came off the driveshaft and the driveshaft came out of the
lower unit and remains stuck in the top. The impellar is all to pieces, and
I cannot get the driveshaft to come out and it remains stuck in the
upper part. This is a 1964 evinrude 40 HP. The shift rod came out ok.

Re: Help in pulling lower unit

That problem is caused by someone neglecting to install the upper O Ring on the driveshaft or not greasing the upper splines, or both.

Unfortunately the only way I've encountered to remove a stuck driveshaft is to grab a non bearing portion of the shaft with vicegrips and hopefully knock it out of there with a hammer. If the engine is off the boat, it can be turned upside down and penatrating oil can be run down the shaft into the driveshaft/crankshaft spline area..... might help.

Thanks so much for the reply. Not what I was wanting to hear,
but at least I have a clue on what to do next.

Should you destroy the driveshaft in removing it (it happens), and you can't find one here on iboats, let me know, I may have one.
