Hi all,
I checked my oil level today and noticed that oil is creamy on the dip stick. I know it means water in the oil
I ran the engine for abot an hour before I found out this problem.

This is on 1988 Mercruiser 140 with Alpha 1 outdrive.

What should I do? If anyone could help with steps I should take to detecting and eliminating the problem.

Thank you very much in advance,
Lenny

Re: Help!!! Creamy oil

It sounds like you are going to do a tear down. Could be head gaskets, cracked block, intake gaskets or exhaust mans leaking on to the open valves . I would start with a by pulling the spark plugs and checking for water. Then there is a cylinder pressure test. Then I would start ripping down the motor till I found the leak. If all the gaskets look fine, you will have to send out the block and ex mans to be pressure tested. Any way around it sucks.
From NY. Were you the guy that gave another poster a hard time for saying he video taped people and turned them in on some lake (wantobe cop). That was great. If not, you missed it.

f_inscreenname,

I am not the guy who abused videotaping copwannabe. I probably would though :)

I will pull the spark plug tomorrow to see the condition of it.
Also, I plan to change oil and filter and run the engine to see if the problem persists.
How do I check if there is water in cylinders?

Is this the right thing to do?
Any more suggestions, please?

Re: Help!!! Creamy oil

Look inside the spark plug holes. Check the plug ends. You can also crank the motor a couple times with the plugs out to see if anything blows out. If your getting water in the cylinders it should run rough at start up and will blow out white smoke. Do you check oil often? How long before you noticed the water? How old are your exh mans? How old is the motor? If you run it with new oil. Keep a close eye on it. Don't want to do any more damage. Its cheep to change a gasket (if you do it yourself). A crank is allot different.

Hi f_inscreenname,
Thanks for your feedback.
I checked oil every other time I take her out.
I think at most I ran with water in oil for 45 min to an hour. The motor is 1988 and I have no idea how old are exhaust manifolds.

Have your manafold and riser pressure checked. Leaking manafold and riser is the main cause of water in the oil! Dont start tearing down an engine before doing a pressure check.

Trent,
I plan to change riser and possibly manifold.
I pulled the spark plug and see no water indication in cylinders.
I don't know when was the last time manifold and riser have been replaced. It could be more then 4 years old.

Is there anything I should do first, before taking off the riser.

Thanks,
Lenny

Trent,
Is there something I should be aware of when taking this apart?
I have never done this before.
Is there possibility of water going into the boat when I takeit out?
What's the fair cost for riser and manifold?

Thanks,
Lenny

Re: Help!!! Creamy oil

If you got a 140 why not pull it out of the water? If not clamp down on the hose from the transom plate to keep water from comming in. Check this web site out for parts.... Manifolds

Riser info.

Re: Help!!! Creamy oil

This is unbelievable,
I change oil and oil filter, put in new oil and ran the boat today for an hour.
There was no water indication on the dipstick. I took out spark plug and saw no water indication there either.
I think that while the boat was on land the engine cover was open and rain water might have gotten into the engine through the carburetor.
I will still change exhaust manifold and riser, but will do it as soon as I winterize the boat. This way I will not miss any time this season.

I’M SAVED!!! :)
I hope I am right.

Thank you guys again for your input,
Lenny
