Help _ transom cable

I had a mechanic out to the boat to do an adjustment on my transom/shift cable. I have a 1994 crownline 225CR, mercruiser I/O. I will need to have the cable replaced in the winter, I have that figured out. But in the event I am out on the water one of the last few times of the season and can't get the engine to drop into forward gear is there anything I can do? Is there a temporary fix to get me in safely?

The boat is irrelevant, we need to know what engine and drive, and the year of the boat is not always the year of the engine and drive (see my signature). Hey, even the drive can be a different year to the engine and transom plates. This is why we ask for the following:-

Engine make, model, year and serial number. (All this information should be on the plastic cover over the carburetor)
Drive make, model, year, and serial number. (Serial number is on the top part of the drive)

I know it's a 350 V8 and the engine hasn't been replaced.

Thanks for the welcome. Looking forward to a place to go for some good advice.

So do I need to go to the boat for more info for you to have any tricks or something to do in worst case scenario?

I will be driving it one final time before the cable is replaced by my mechanic, it's to my storage facility. Just looking for something to keep in my back pocket if something goes wrong on my way to the storage facility.

If the engine is the same year as the hull, and if it's an Alpha, then it's a Gen II.... But too many 'if's to be sure, that's why we like as much information as possible. That's why you see it in my signature, so every time I post a question, the relevant information is there, without me having to think about it.

Now, on to your problem.

If you have intimate understanding of the shift system, and know exactly what is giving you the problem at the time, then you might be able to work around it. But without knowing what the problem is, impossible to say. You say the shift cable is to be replaced, why? What are the exact symptoms now?

The only reason I think the cable has to be replaced is because I had 2 different mechanics out to the boat and they both said that was my problem.

The symptoms are that the boat dies when shifting from nuertal into gear. It works sometimes, and not others.

Killing the engine when shifting INTO gear is usually a cable, yes, but not always. Do the diagnostics on it to be sure. Pull the drive and check the cable yourself.
