Hi guys.
GLG here from Vancouver Island.
Been lurking for sometime and I thought I would say Hi and Merry Christmas
I have had my Starcraft for a few years and fish with it all summer.
It's a 1975 18.5' Starchief with a Volvo 130c stern-drive.
I have put a lot of springs (Salmon) in the fish box with this old girl.

Hi GLG, Merry Christmas to you and family. Nice looking Chieftain. That's one on my list. But I am looking for something more in the 25+ foot range. Oh welcome to the Starcraft cult(club) with the pic of the boat. Lets see some pics of them fish too.:D

Thanks ezmobee. She?s old but still has plenty of life left in her.
Pugetsound I live in the Comox Valley. Mostly fish local and make trips to Nootka, Bamfield and Campbell River. Was out fishing with a buddy (his boat) today but no luck. Still nice just to get out and try. Did see another boat pickup a nice spring. GLG

V. I. - Have you ever brought your boat across the Straigts of Juan DeFuca to the U S Mainland????? I have read a lot about the fishing around Sook and when they keep telling us CITIZENS of the State of Washington there are not enough Salmon to fish. How come the Canadians let you fish the same area. We get S----d by our own Fish and Wildlife Dept. I have seen some Big salmon from your area. Have to give your area a try some year before I get to old. \ I fish mid channel bank ocassionally so can see your area from there. I never was bvave enough to try the crossing even with my larger Glasply Boats 19 to 21 ft. that I sold three years ago. ED

:eek:Nice:eek: Salmon:eek:, I'd like to say we catch em that big in the Great Lakes all the time. They run a little smaller over here though, about half that size. Love catching salmon, got a few 30 lb Kings from the Au Sable River over the years. Nothing fights like a salmon that I've ever hooked.

Nice looking fishing boat too. I need to add Starchief to my wish-list. That boat would be perfect for Lake St. Clair. Would do good on St. Clair River for Salmon and Sturgeon too. Thanks for sharing that picture with me.

Anybody that works a fishing picture into their post or resto thread I love looking at them. Ya I'm addicted to fish-porn.

DI35 nice boat. That fish picture is the closest I?ve come to something that large. I had a couple of 30# in the summer of 08, over in Nootka. My cuz picked up a 42# in Nootka last summer. Me, I found lots at 28#. Sooke is on my fishing wish list. Good luck with the repairs and hope you get her back in the water in January. Question for you. Where did you mount your downriggers?

CheapboatKev thanks for the compliment. I like your boat too. Yep I?m hard-core. Was out fishing again yesterday. Hit two undersize (22?) winter springs. Gently released to grow some more. You are right that is one heck of a fish. As for kickers for your boat, either 8 or 9.9 long shafts, both work for me. If memory serves me I can travel around 5 mph on my 8hp. I fish between 1 and 3 mph depending on conditions. If that matches your target speed you should be fine. If not go with a 15hp.

PaulV I hear you. You bet, that is some girl to land that monster, holding it up for a picture is the easy part. You know what they say about the girls up her. They kick *****.

Re: Hello from VI

GLG, I'm curious, when you're catching salmon do you target a certain temp/depth to hit the thermocline where they like to feed?

In the Great Lakes we usually did well around 54-56 degrees, whatever depth that can be found, anywhere from 10' to 200' typically.

The largest fish we've gotten out of the freshwater over here was a 33lb Chinook my parents caught back in '91/'92 that was the 3rd biggest catch in Michigan that year. I can post a photo if you'd like;)

Our fisheries have been hit hard by the invasive species(gobies, zebra mussels, cormorants, etc.) eating the bait fish before they can grow to fingerling size that the salmon love.

Glad to hear you west-coasters have some salmon left after the big kill-off that happened when the irrigation problem took all the water/warmed up all the water.

Good luck to ya:D

Pugetsound? Nope I only use my boat in sheltered waters. No reason for me not to. The fishing rules are plain nuts in you neck of the woods. You are more than welcome to come up here and catch some fish. If I were in your shoes I would be rigging a boat for a trip or two. Twins on the back of a Starcraft and picking the right day? I have zero experience in the JDF so I really don?t know what to tell you.

Huron Angler good question about temp/depth. Out here we are more interested in the amount of light that is available to the fish. They don?t wear sunglasses so early mornings they are shallow and mid day they are deep. Well that?s the theory. Personally I keep records and fish the depths that work for me in the past. I don?t think we even get a thermocline here as the tide and current mix up the water pretty good. Post a picture of a 30+ heck yea. Sorry to here that your fisheries are having problems. We have lots of issues here too. I find that volunteering to help the fish helps me just as much.

Re: Hello from VI

GLG whats your choice for bait. I generally fish the Salt with herring off a Scotty Downrigger and sometime use a Dodger with it. Most always fish 40-53 ft depth, seems to work best for Me, are you fishing the Thompson River?? Or Mostly the sheltered inland waters? I have seen some nice fish off or only a Apex Lure. I have some in the box but never have used one?? ED
