I have the manual and it tells me where to run the hoses, and to install the heater lower than the fill cap.

1) For the output (to the heater) there is already a hose there. What do I do with that existing hose?

2) If I have water flowing to the heater, and plumb it into the bottom of the heater (and out the top), does the heater still have to be lower than the fill cap? If I fill the antifreeze while the engine is running, will this work? I have spent hours trying to mount the heater box lower and there is just no place to put it.

Re: Heater install 4.3 closed

Bump. It also seems to me that if hot water is flowing from the pipe pictured above, to the heat exchanger: why couldn't I just direct that water through my new heater core first? So the hot water would go from the source pictured, through the heater, and then to the heat exchanger. There would be no need for a return to the water pump. Anyone need to talk me out of this?

Also; does there exist a flow diagram? Lots of hoses here- it would be good to know how it actually works. thanks

You have the advantage of knowing what engine model and year you have, we don't.

oops; I thought the picture cut and pasted from the manual would do it. 2005, 4.3L, closed cooling, 190 hp, TKS. Engine serial # OW311876

Ayuh,... Your picture is showing an MPI manifold,...
But, anyways...
You have to utilize the hi-pressures, 'n low pressures of the system to move water through the heater...

The Hi-pressure point is Below the T-stat, in the intake manifold...
And,...
The Low pressure area to move the water back into the system, is the pipeplug in the circulating waterpump...

Sorry, I don't memorize all the pictures and which manual they come from.

You can remove the plug (6) from the manifold and put your fitting where the arrow shows.
If you want it on the other side of the thermostat housing, just move the switch to the other side.
