Has to be an easier way to drain the oil

Okay so is there an easier way to change the oil in my boat. I've tried warming up the oil and go through the dip stick, but it goes very slooowwwly. I've tried to go through the oil pan but made more of a mess than I wanted to, it's too shallow to get anything in there.

I've seen a couple of things, such as a hose that hookes onto the oil plug. I'm curious to see if they work as their intended to.

Any advice on making this job a little less messy and more convenient.

Yes the hoses do work that you connect to the oil pan and stick the hose out the bilge drain.
A good suction pump works well too connected to the dipstick tube.
Does the tube have the threaded end the size of a garden hose?

I got a garden hose adapter for my Topsider vaccum pump and it worked MUCH faster than putting that skinny little tube down the dipstick....I also found that if the oil is just warm, not HOT, it pumps better because when hot it can soften the plastic hose to the point where it collapses from the vaccum...
I just did a quick mid season oil change with my boat on the mooring and the Topsider using the garden hose connection sucked out 4 qts in about 5 minutes...much faster than when I used the skinny hose down the dipstick tube...

double garbage bags work great if you have a pan plug

I've tried the one that goes directly into the dip stick with a 1/4" hose that goes directly to the pump...maybe that might be the problem

humm....I like the garbage bag idea, might have to just try that!!!

Yeah, until you rip the bag on a sharp piece of fiberglass.......Aren't some boats made of fiberglass? It's not alway smooth gel-coat in the bilge......In fact it's NEVER smooth gel-coat in the bilge!

I connected a pan drain hose on mine and permanently clamped it to the port riser.

Then I bought a Moeller vac pump.

I can drain the oil with 18 strokes and about 5 min hot or cold and not spill a drop!

If you like to do your own transmission fluid, you can also suck out several qts of automatic trans fluid and not spill any when you drop the pan to change the filter.

Clamping the hose to the riser also means I don't have to reach into an oily dirty bilge to fish out the hose either.

Wanna change you PS or trim fluid? Remove the return line on the PS pump and suck it out........pop the cap on the trim pump and suction it out too.......do the tow vehicle too!!

The garbage bag thing is the easiest way and you get all the oil out too unlike the dipstick method.

You have to use the black contractor trash bags from like Lowes or home depot. The real thick black ones.

You take two bags and out one inside the other and put it under the oil pan and drain it.

Just be careful and you won't rip it. You candrag those thick contractor bags across a lawn when they're full and they will hardly ever rip.

The only way it's gonna rip is if you just yank it out hard and careless and it gets caught on a part of the engine or a bilge switch or something like that. You are not gonna rip it dragging it across the bilge.

Mine has very nice, smooth gel in the bilge.

+1, the self-contained vac pumps work great. I use it on the boat, car, tractor, etc.

I bet! I wish I could use the drain hose method, but don't have direct access to the bilge drain, but the vac pump sure is easier and cleaner than the trash bag method. They're worth every penny.

Why would your bilge be oily and dirty? My dads is spotless on his 1981 Silverline, and so is the one in my old 1966 Larson( I sold it to a friend). A bilge shouldn't be oily, the Coast Guard won't like seeing an oil slick when you pump out your bilge! I'd fix the reason it's getting oily.

I almost never pump it out. There's always a few drips of oil, coolant, etc.

There's usually never enough water in there for the bilge pump to even pick it up...

plastic bags to catch an oil change??? all i use a plastic bag for is to catch the spill from oil filter removal. that they will work for. other than that...

bags work great , a piece of carpet underneath if you are afraid of ripping but i never have and just snip a corner or poke a hole in bag to drain.

Furnace:D you clearly love your vaccuum pump :D
well then, i'm in love with mine too.....

this is to help people who don't have one i think
agreed. it is. and all the vac. folks are saying is this is the easiest way to drain the oil. cleanest, easiest to transport, easiest to suck up anything ya want, etc. ya don't even need any tools to use it either. what could be easier. new engines even come with the connection to connect a vac pump right to the dip stick tube. that's probably better yet..

that's true. no one said boating was on the cheap... :(

my first experice with one was when i had a 4 stoke pwc. it had a dry sump. there was no drain plug to drain the oil out. ya had to suck it out some how. once i got it. well it's been all down hill from there... ;)
