Grinding When Shifting

Hey guys, my 87' 125 crapped out on me. I went out for the day and had no problem. When i got back close to the dock I popped it into neutral to wait for a guy on the ramp and went to put it back into forward and it made a grinding noise, similar to an engagement shift, but only continuous and not relenting. I tried a couple more times briefly and still grinding. I was drifting into a dock so I jammed the shifter quick and far to see if it would pop into gear and it did, luckily. I found out that reverse was fine, but it is just continuous grinding when trying to go into forward. What do you guys think, could shift linkage have come loose, adjustable? lower unit, hopefully not!? Thanks

Re: Grinding When Shifting

Thats a real hard one to diagnose without inspecting it.
Check your cables and shift rod.

You should always shift into gear with a swift positive motion. Easing it into gear will only shorten its life.
Often, forward gear will show these symptoms befor reverse, because it is used more often.
