New gimbal bearing is in and bellows are replaced! I got probably a good 8 pumps of grease in and grease started coming out between the aluminum housing of the bearing? I have marks on both housings making sure the grease holes were lined up and triple checked the alignment of the compression ring before I installed it. I expected to see grease come out of the bearing? Do I have a problem or is this normal? Bearing spins freely still and I expected it to have a little stickiness from grease by now? Thanks for any input! I was hoping to have the drive back on today but don't want to proceed until I know I don't need to remove the bearing again :(

I just put one of those in myself. Did you check to see if there was a hole in the bearing to accept grease. I spun that outer sleeve around and did not find a hole. The sales guy at the service desk at our local Mercruiser dealer told me that the oem gimbal bearings are non serviceable. That after market one he showed me had the hole for greasing and it was half the price.

Yes it did have a hole.... I made sure it lined up. I may just be being paranoid but I expected grease to come out the bearing, not between the housing.

Grease will pump out the area of least resistance. Bet if you turn the inner race and pump some, turn it some more, pump a few more strokea, and do that till you go all the way around the grease will come out of the inner portion too.

Then wipe up all the excess grease so you don't have such a mess.
