gel coat patching

On my Century Coronado Cardel, I have some gel coat errosion in front of my rudder caused by the prop. Any suggestions on what or how to repair it? It's gotten into the glass so I'm thinking it needs to be ground to solid glass and glass added back along with some resin. However, is there a better repair method? I have heard about a gel coat putty but am not sure how tough it is compared to glass and resin.
