gasket failure

I posted this last night but don't see it here, I'll try again. I searched your older posts on this subject but I still need some answers.
My 88 150xr4 has had that intermittent getting out of the hole lag that was helped by enrichening, I guess this is a lean condition from what I've read here. Anyway last weekend on some big water up here in the northeast, the thing started to run really bad. No idle,4500 rpm tops, and definetly down at least one cylinder.
While checking out the motor on the ears,I saw lots of steam coming from the exhaust. Pulling the plugs revealed much water coming from the port bottom cylinder. The head gasket had come apart, dropping a small section of the steel ring into the cylinder, dinging up the piston and head. Worse, it looks like the washdown while running let the rings do a number on the sleeve, leaving it bellmouthed and scuffed.
I can repair the head, no problem, and I'm decent mechanically, so I can do most of the repair my self. The only thing that I need done is to swap sleeves, maybe a dealer.
So questions: What else do I look for as far as damage? What does anybody think is the cause of this? To lean? Old gasket(original)? Is there a recommendation as to when these gaskets should be replaced? Is there an outside shot that I can claim this on my Insurance?
Thanks for any help,
Dennis

Re: gasket failure

You are not imaginaning that, because I replied....Unless we are both crazy.
I think your theory of The meltdown being caused by a lean condition ,is the most plausible one. As a 2cycle runs lean, it also runs lean on lubrication, which will increase friction and heat on the cylinder which is lean.
A failed water pump or other cooling problem or carbon buildup under the ring lands would produce a more uniform damage to ALL cylinders.
Sorry to hear about the meltdown. But it sounds like this motor is in good hands.

Re: gasket failure

thanks for the reply(both!)
Now, with 3 carbs for six cylinders wouldn't that mean that both bottom lungs would be lean? And, according to my owners manual there is no adjustment at all.
So, I guess that a carb rebuild on all 3 is in order and maybe richer jets? Will one size up make a differance? These are the stock jets.
Thanks again
Dennis

Re: gasket failure

Yes, and inspect the reeds, for less clearance on those two than the other cylinders.Just a suspission.

Re: gasket failure

You are looking at a rebuild here but with these engines you can oversise just one cylider .
