I just bought a 1989 searay BBR16 with a 3.0L and a alpha one drive. The boat runs great. I checked compression, all four cylinders were 120psi. I noticed a slight gas smell in the oil, so I changed it and ran the boat. The gas smell is still there. Is this normal, and if not what could cause it.

Look at the clear (normally yellow) hose that runs from the fuel pump to the carb. Is their any gas in that line? If so, You need to replace your fuel pump.

There is one more possiblity...If the float on the carb is allowing fuel to dump into the engine after the engine is turned off, the gas can leak past the rings and into the crankcase.
That happened to me some years ago and it thinned the oil to the point of ruining the engine!!! I don't know if it could be your prob. but it was real enough to me to mention it.

Michael
zakiah7

Do not replace the fuel pump until you have done two things. First, as suggested, eyeball the yellow tube going from the pump to the carb. If you see any kind of liquid in there(it will be gas), replace it and the pump. If you do not, check the carb. It is flooding. This is not uncommon. You need to get the carb fixed first and then you will have to change the oil multiple times.

Had this problem on a boat I bought a few years ago. After fixing the carb, changed the oil 5 times before the fuel smell was gone.
