Is anyone familiar with this Mapsource software addition to the GPS? I live in Central US and am interested in the utility of US Central Recreational Lakes for on lake navigation, depth charting, marinias, ramps and fishing hot spots. Thanks! Rich

I have that. I could not find any depth information on the lakes in Minnesota in the software, and only the biggest lakes had any real information at all.

Mapsource is a generic name for their PC software. There are 3 products that actually provide the data for it: US waterways & lights (no longer sold) which contains maps, buoys, markers, lights, etc but no depth info or marina info). Fishing Hotspots which contains depth info and fishing hotspot info, not sure what else) and Bluechart which contains everything - maps, markers, depth, marinas etc., etc.

Bluechart is excellent. It sells for $150 but you can find it for around $110 on eBay and Amazon. Waterways & lights is fine if you don't need depth info (you navigate from channel marker to channel marker or use your GPS in conjunction with paper charts) I can't speak to fishing hotspots - I have it but never used it because I am strictly and ocean boater and hotspots is for all the US Lakes.

You can also buy the Maptech waterproof maps for your area which now come with their PC software called Offshore Navigator - It does all lot of the same things as Mapsource. You can download routes and waypoint to your GPS from it but you can't download the actual maps. You can however, put it on a laptop, hook it up to your GPS and use it as a killer GPS chartplotter!

I have used the Fishing Hotspots CD with a 162, Dr. Rich, and it is excellent for the lakes it covers, but that is generally only big ones.

The Garmin website can give you lists of what lakes are covered.

I think the U.S. Recreational Lakes CDs and/or datacards are from a different source and cover many more lakes, but I have not tried it on my 276C, which wont accept Fishing Hotspots.

That's what I have, the Fishing Hotspots. It only has info on the largest lakes, and that's in Minnesota, the land of so many lakes they stopped counting at 10,000.

The info's fairly useful for the lakes it does cover, but I rarely bother with it. Local sources are always more up to date and better.

I used the local DNR's maps most of the time for lake countour lines, etc. Much better.
