Fuel Delivery Issues

Hey Guys! I've got the VP 5.0GL PEFS 4012048045 3869056 in an '01 Glastron GX205. At the lake yesterday, it died and wouldn't restart. After sitting awhile, it would fire on first crank but not run. After that, cranking only. I confirmed no fuel in carb, or TO carb. We've not had the boat long and have doubted the fuel guage as it doesn't seem to come down from "full" reading on our afternoon outings. So, I wondered if we'd not been topping it off properly and it was actually empty. We put several gallons in it but still no start. Still fired on first crank. I cranked plenty of times and also did several key "on" cycles, trying to give the pump a chance to get new fuel up there. This was seven hours after it initially died.

Earlier this morning I checked out the troubleshooting chart in the VP carbed fuel diagnostic manual and went out to begin some testing. It fired on first crank again. I cranked again, expecting no fire but it then ran and has ran since.

The running after cooling down overnight leans me towards relay or pump but wouldn't seven hours have been enough cooling down? For future reference, when doing "simple" testing on the lake without tools, can you typically feel or hear the pump run (or only when there's fuel going through it?)? Also, when/how does the pump run until engine runs? Just wondering if my key cycling was worthwhile.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Re: Fuel Delivery Issues

Here is a quick and easy test to see if the pump runs. With engine off, remove the fuel pump relay, make a jumper wire up with a male spade terminal on each end. Now jump between terminals 30 and 87 of the relay socket. You should be able to hear the pump run and the carb fill with fuel if the pump works.

So Don,
If the pump works . Then its the relay that is not working properly right. I'm having the same issue on my 4.3 GL . Just wondering. Thanks ahead of time.

Re: Fuel Delivery Issues

I am little confused, did the boat stay running when the key was on the "start" position and starter was engaged? The kill switch will cause that issue. Intermittent stuff is hectic. I had a fuel pump start to fail once and would some times not "start", acted intermittently and eventually was able to get it to not run and I could measure the voltage at the plug and verify the pump was getting power and replaced the pump.

When I said "it would fire on first crank but not run", I meant that, instead of just cranking, it would do the initial VROOM for a split second, sounding like it was going to start and run but not actually doing so. I assume that was the confusing part. After that it would just crank only.

Thanks for the tips. I've since pinpointed the fuel pump relay thanks to the jumper wire diagram from Don S. that I used the next time I got it to not run. It did good for awhile but is now doing the same thing like it needs another relay. Getting ready to post a new one on that.
