Still trying to get my 1998 Force 12 running like it should. Earlier while running the engine had run away, failing to stop even with the ignition key. I read in another thread it could be due to bad rectifier. I take a look at mine while killing time waiting for a timing light and compression tester gauge to arrive and I notice both of these yellow wired leading down from under the flywheel TO the regulator have definitely suffered so heat damage and it appears the heat came from the wires themselves and not externally. The rubber jackets are fused together. What would cause this and could it account for my run away engine or conversely did the run away engine cause this or maybe neither. Getting very frustrated. I get a lot of satisfaction from restoring anything old, but I'm about ready to quit and sell this thing for parts. It's one thing after another. The engine will crank and run but it's running rough. Will know if it's due to the timing within the next few hours. Regardless this appears another separate issue entirely.

The fact it only happened at the connection (butt connector) on both wire, I would surmise it was caused by loose/dirty connection. Such connection can cause a high resistance connection that will generate heat. I do not believe this was caused by high speed running engine.

As for not being able to turn off a run away engine, check make sure the shut down wire is connected accordingly. Can you specify 1998 Force 12? Is that a 12 hp Force motor from 1998? Or do you mean 120HP, 1998 Force Motor?

Those Amphenol connectors SUCK!!! Time causes the connection/grease to loose it's connection and it will spark causing the heat and burning inside the connection.
Use a better butt connectors and forget the grease.
