Force starter question

I have a 1997 75 hp Force, the starter will drop in and out while trying to start. I turn the key and hold it but the starter gear will drop down like I let off the key. Then the gear will try and come back up and engage to the fly wheel again. The gear will only stay engaged for a very short time like a sec. then drop in and out.

I purchased this boat about a month ago and has done this the whole time. It's very annoying that you can only try to start it 1 bump at a time. It does take a while.

I hope I explained this well enough for someone to help me with this problem?

Re: Force starter question

Sounds like a ground problem, a solenoid problem, A loose connection between the batt and solenoid or between the solenoid and starter or a bad ignition switch or a loose connection between the switch and the solenoid. I would first check all connections under the engine cowl as the shaking of the motor while trying to crank is what's causing the intermittent connection.
