I am a novice fly-fisherman and while I have a few favorite flies I am not above putting on a hook and a worm to catch a few trout to build up my confidence. Of course I usually spend my time fly-rodding for bream and bass because the nearest true trout water is about 4 hours away.
Anyway, I was looking through a fly-fishing catalog and saw a pump spray bottle of fly floatant advertised that was recommended for putting on your dry flies which I thought would be neat as I am always having to use my vest, shirt or pants to wipe off any excess floatant. But what got me thinking is they also recommended that you can spray your hat the night before a trip to waterproof it. HMMM I thought this sounds like Scotch Guard or at least something like it. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried Scotch Guard on a fly or know of someone that has? It sounds like it would work as it seals fabrics and repels water which is basically what floatant does. Since I am not a fly tier and purchase my flies (as cheap as I can which is pretty darn cheap so far) I am hesitant to try it as it may destroy my flies. I want any and all opinions and just to prove I am trying to be a good fly-fisherman I want to show you a place I frequent during the summer about 1h 30Min or so from the house. The water is no more than waist deep and there are thousands of medium sized bream that love a size 12 Adams. I also sometimes use it with a hares ear nymph dropper about a foot below it when they short strike the Adams. I prefer the Adams as it is more fun to fish but I also like to catch them even though I release everything I catch there. I am thinking about going with a soft hackle hares ear this year as a dropper because it looks like it may be a little more of an open water type bug where a nymph is better on bottom. BTW I have also caught them and small Jackfish (chain pickerel) on muddlers here as well.
