FlyWheel Issues! I Think Someone Took It Apart!

So i'm preforming my link and synk on my inline 6, 115Hp. I got my cyl#1 at TDC, and I looked at my indicator at the top by the flywheel, and guess what... No markings! They are at the opposite side?? So i took out my dial indicator to find .464"(I think this is the right measurement, I don't have my manual on me right now). And guess what... No indicator markings on flywheel!!!!!!
So it looks like somebody has already tried to work on this motor, and the first thing they did was take apart the flywheel, and NOT REMOVE IT!! so what can I DO? When I insalled my flywheel, it did go in to he correct spline line up...
If I try to take the flywheel apart again and try to line up the markings, will I mess up the orientation of the magnets for the trigger? Any Help would be great!!!

The trigger magnets are going to align with the splines and notch on the crank, they will always be correct. Set the motor up on TDC with the flywheel cover on. Use a piece of stiff wire or coat hanger to make a temporary pointer. Clamp that to the block and align it with the pointer on the cover. Remove the cover, remove the bolts for the trigger magnet. Check for TDC at the plug hole, rotate the flywheel until the "0" timing mark aligns most closely with the temporary pointer. Bolt the trigger magnets back in, remove the temp pointer, put the cover back on and check you dwell setting. I think .464 is correct for inlines, it should be marked on the flywheel.

If I were you, I'd take the bolts out of the flex plate, and properly orient the flywheel. That way, you can be sure to get the loctite on the bolts that the hack didn't know about, and also torque them to spec.

It's really not a big deal, except you sure don't want the flex plate bolts to come loose. Set the engine so #1 is about TDC, and rotate the flywheel so the timing mark is about 0. The next step is 60 degrees away, so it's not like precision rocket science or anything.

hope it helps

Thanks Gents! I got the flywheel back into the right orientation!! You guys were great help! Thanks! Now All I have to do is figure out why I don't have spark on my #1 cylinder now?? I hooked up my timing light, and no blinking... Took the induction clamp off... took out the spark plug, hooked the ignition cable back up...and held the spark plug against the block.. and cranked her.. guess what, nothing.. not even one spark. POOP!

Try putting it on other plug wires.

Thanks sschefer! I'll hook up the other wires tonight and try it out, I hope its only a coil.. I remember one thing I forgot to do, was to remove the idle stabilizer box like the manual says. could that kill the spark by chance? I've noticed while I crank there is no light flashing, but when I stop cranking, it flashes once when it stops? But i'll give it a go with the other 5 wires to see what happens! Thanks!

I hope your not chasing the same problem the prior owner was when he moved the trigger magnets in the first place. If so, I'll back out of this and hope someone with I6 experience chimes in.

No worries, but thanks for your help sschefer! I've got a merc manual, and i'll start doing some troubleshooting on her tonight. I've pretty much got everything back to spec, now its just a matter of hunting down the faulty part. I've got another 115 I6 in the shop that I want to sell, but looks like i'll use her for some spare parts for now!
Thanks for all your help!
