I'm going to Cuba the 26th and have the chance to fish from a low level pier out into the ocean. I prefer casting with lures. What type of lure would I use to catch a filet rich fish?

Try something with a green or black back and silver sides....3" to 6" long with something inside that rattles (mirolure catch 2000)

Or try a D.O.A. Shrimp.

I would take something to use with live bait.....Circle hooks and bobbers and egg sinkers....then ask what live bait to use from a local.

Don't know a thing about Cuba.

Derwood.

Thanks derwood. I'll use my rubbery minnows with a spinning spoon infront. For bait, the supper serving of seafood will have a new meaning. Surface jitterbugs are out as well as plastic worms? Local bait is certainly not shrimp!

I bet you have quite a selection of curly tail grubs for fishing walleye and other things. Take them along as well as some 1/8 jig heads. Minnow colored are best as Derwood mentioned. Jerk baits, poppers, and about any minnow like lure would work. The thing to keep in mind is S/W fish require a stout hook and any hook that is not stainless will rust even if rinsed so don't take your favorite lures unless you change the hardware. One thing to keep in mind when fishing S/W anything is prey if it is smaller than you are. Of course there are some exceptions in fish that are not predatory but anything that eats meat will eat anything that is smaller and if it is easy to catch so much the better.

Local bait is squid. The deep sea types use a 5" squid that is white rubber with a blue tinge. Infront of the hotel its 6' of water half a mile out to the coral reef and breakers. Solution: 1 Pedalo the two kids driving, girlfriend reading and me trolling in the rear. Strike! Had to play him for a while. Then brought him in for a look see. 5 lbs. 12-14 inches long and very silvery. A perfect day!
