What is the ratio of rental time to fishing time one should expect when chartering a boat for bottom fishing (ie, snapper, grouper, etc)? I just had a discouraging experience and need to know what I could/should have done.

Also, what's with the cleaning of the catch? I understood it was part of the package, but when we docked, we were instructed to take our catch to the end of the dock. There we met a dude who offered to clean and wrap our catch for $.50/lb.

Welcome to tourist heII. I live here year round, born and raised. You charter to fish or to dive, not both. Generally the catch is split between the boat and charters, and cleaning ain't free, otherwise it would be fun to fun to clean fish.....

Thanks for info, SoulWinner. Still getting mixed signals from others who have chartered out of different FL locations. I will definitely ask more questions of the next boat I before we sail.
Understand confusion about cleaning as it's work. I've been known to pass on deer, because once you knock it down, the fun's over!

One example was leaving from East coast (Miami, Ft Lauderdale), you can be fishing within 3 to 5 mi after leaving marina.
