Am I the only person that studies fish even out of my area so much that I know most of the most common names and generalized locations of fish? I also tend to be able to tell from location of the angler whether he means a S/W fish or F/W fish like trout or sheepshead. Is it just that I pay attention to these things or do you guys actually mean to tell me if it is not in your area you have no clue about it. This is not to say i am smaterr or anything because I don't think I am or know everything but I just want to know if anyone else sees what I see among the two recent posts about fish and names. Not sure if it is a lack of attention or knowledge and want to do something about it so any and all posts including telling me off are welcome.

Re: Fish Names.

I'm kinda gonna have to go with Peter on this one. Capt. on the other hand of what you said, some people just post and don't READ. I would think that anybody that knows anything at all about fishing would realize from a million episodes of In Fisherman that if he's catching a "drum-like" fish along with walleye, it's gotta be fresh. Walleye=Freshwater. Peter, can you imagine the mass confusion that a mention of a steelhead might arouse? What about black bass? ha ha. It is tough sometimes, though sometimes you just have to 'figger it out.'

We have plenty of freshwater drum here. They usually feed on the bottom and will eat anything dead or alive. Bass fishermen often catch them on plastic worms. They do not fight well due to their odd-shaped body, relative light muscle-mass, and undersized, rounded tail. You can target them virtually anywhere in any major river with crawdads or worms fished dead (I mean still)on the bottom. A 3" grub bounced (jigged) along the bottom (of the river) is hard to beat as well. The stones in their heads are used to grind up the crustaceans and mussels that make up the major part of their diet. They make a drumming noise when you catch them and hold them (you can feel it) and also during their spawn using their air bladder. It is also audible through the bottom of aluminum boats in late spring or early summer. Sounds like bullfrogs in the boat with you. I have heard they are good to eat, never tried it personally since they are bottom feeders and all the lakes on the TN river have warning signs for catfish.

The only raseon I can think of to fish for them is if you don't know how to catch anything else.

bye!

Re: Fish Names.

i think alot of people just don't fish often enough, or care to know details on fish not found in their local waters.

many people i've run into fishing only know what bait to use on the fish they like to catch & eat, at the same time every year when they normally feel like fishing. that's not including the tournament fishermen though.

most bass fishermen i've met do get into the sport and really study the habits of fish.

i think its just normal to run into alot of people who care no more about in-depth fishery knowledge than some of us would in billboard painting techniques ;)

Re: Fish Names.

PFB, I can say that I am a hobbyist fisherman. I would love to fish everyday and would love to know more about fishing, but at this time with my commitments, I can't. As you probably know, I am not afraid to post, but I try awful hard to be correct. I don't mind if someone corrects me because this is why I am here.
1. To learn something
2. To help other people out where I can
3. For entertainment

There will always be people with different levels of interest and expertise on this board. There will also be people that fully believe in some bit of information that is wrong.

My wife and I have different interest levels. I don't ever want to know anything about sewing. She does not want to know about changing the oil in the car. I think she should know more so when I'm not here, she does not get taken advantage of. She thinks I should know more about sewing so when she is not here, I can fix my clothes without throwing them away. I see her point, she sees mine, but neither of us will ever know the others portion.

Do I try to learn more about fishing? Sure, I have bought books and have a subscription to In-fisherman and watch Monday night fishing on the Outdoor channel and try to catch Bill Dance on Saturday, but I will probably never be an expert unless I live past my retirement age when I can fish more than 10 days out of the year. I will still have fun fishing whenever I get a chance.

Hopefully my lack of knowledge in certain areas does not preclude me from being part of the conversation. I envy people that have their lives in order so they can fish more and learn more about fishing and fish than I will ever know. I can say that I have learned lot from this board and have even learned things from the fish name posts. Heck, when I read through 30% of the 1,000 page fishing encyclopedia I bought, I sure learned a lot of names, but still get them mixed up especially by geographic area.

Hopefully I am not off base here and have addressed the meaning of your post. to fish and fishing. There is nothing like it.

Re: Fish Names.

Good posts so far on this. I guess my point is/did get across better than I thought it would. Also at this point it looks like I am far from the norm as far as fishermen go. Fishing is my only hobby. I love fishing and if I am not fishing I am working on something fishing gear including my boat, reading about fishing, watching fishing shows or doing/thinking something related to fishing. I can't go to the aquarium w/o looking at the fish and how they are relating to what is in the tank from a fisherman's standpoint. I am by no means an expert but I hope to achieve that status someday. I have fished both salt and fresh water in many states and for many different species of fish. I can fish for anything any way possible and have rods/reels running from fly-rod to heavy s/w gear. And i admit it I find the closed mindedness of many anglers annoying. In any case keep the thoughts coming on this and I am gonna get the gear ready because I have some time in the morning to fish before I have to come home and get ready for the wife's work Christmas Party

Re: Fish Names.

Good luck on the fishing PFB. There are so many things I want to do and so little time. Guitar and Spanish come to mind. I know of people who fish everyday. I have to admit, I just took my poles out of the car and enjoyed doing a little more fishing this year. I still hope to get some in at the power plant cooling pond. Not sure my back could stand ice fishing but have thought of that too. Wife just got on my butt because I left a lure on top of the TV.

Re: Fish Names.

Well I agree to a point....A person can spend his whole life on the gulf coast and not learn evrything about the fish here....shoot ....untill last year when I got my boat I did not know that there were more than one kind of pin fish....I still don't know how many kinds there are.

I almost took the little "golden pinfish" (not sure if thats its real name) home when I first caught it....Its pretty....Pretty good bait...Yuk, Yuk!

I can't blame someone for not knowing the diffrence between a walleye and a pike if they have never fished north of Fl....or never fished freshwater alltoghether (I do know the diffrence and do fish freshwater....Just makeing an exmlp.)

I know lots about S. Water fishing and a good bit about FLORIDA F. Water fishing....I can tell the diffrent speices of F.W. Trout but I can't tell you where they occur naturaly or what they eat or the laws and reg. that go with them....I chose to spend my time studying the fish that I fish for and only have a common intrest in the rest of the US.

I don't reply to post about walleye and pike and S.M.Bass because if I did I would only be guessing.

I had no idea there were F.W.fish named "Sheepshead" and did'nt know there were F.W.Drum either.

I watch the fishing shows....But latly I have only been watching the S.Water shows....I can only watch bass fishing so much and then the shows start to blend together.

I'd say there is a good many posters that don't read before they post....I'll just have to rely on you Peter for fish stuff thats not in my neiborhood (anything north of Ocala FL.)

I don't mind learnen about diffrent fish....and do quite often learn somethings that I will never get to use in FL....but I don't think it would bother me if a walleye fisherman from the Cheese state does'nt know much about fishen for Redfish down here in the Sunshine state.

Don't let it bug ya Peter....Just be proud of knowen what ya know and pass it on to your young uns.

Derwood.

Re: Fish Names.

No not patting I just thought everyone that fished did the same thing. I had not too bad a day casting nymphs(flies) for bream. Nothing large but it was a lot of fun and they were more than willing to hit. The only problem was the wind.
The reason I have studied many species is to learn all I can about them. You would be surprised how much a mountain trout is like a river bream. As well inshore S/W fish act a lot like bass do in a river. I am first and foremost a fisherman and can and do fish for anything. Within 3 or 4 hours of here i can just about catch any fish from offshore Marlin to Trout in the mountains so I guess that has something to do with it as well. But I just thought everyone thought this way.

Re: Fish Names.

I think a day spent fishing is a good day aswell.
went ice fishing this morning. was very slow till noon.then it started to pick up till about 4pm. Landed a few nice pike. 15lb, 13lb, 5,lb. cooked the small one on the ice . ya cant beat a shore lunch, always makes em tast even better. Only 4 inches of ice
so far this winter. Last winter at this time
we were driving on 18 inches, If we half to endure winter I prefer it very cold ,it makes winter sports like ice fishing more enjoyable.
I sure would like to try my hand at deep sea fishing, marlin fishing would be a good start.
maybe some day i will give it a go. I'll bett it would prove to be very expensive. probably the ultimate in fishing though. I think the most exciting fishing ive ever done is chinook salmon fishing in big rivers ,my best to date would be 56lbs from the river bank unbelievable fight, they are such a strong fish. whats your favorite
fight,n fish ?

I love to fish for fun but I don't want to make work of it. Its great just to take the boat up the river, hook up a night crawler and toss it over the side of the boat, enjoy the peace and quit, watch the wild life, and wait for something to wiggle your rod tip. Amen

Re: Fish Names.

Hey NoSleep--sounds like a great day of ice fishing. The northern mountain lakes here in New Mexico are beginning to freeze and I am looking forward to ice fishing. How did you catch your pike? Jigging...bait? One of my favorite lakes Eagle Nest is a great place to jig for kokanee and rainbow or cutthroat trout. I also like bringing along my camp stove and cooking some of my catch on the ice. Such a great time! The nice thing about New Mexico is that some of the lakes freeze nicely for ice fishing and some don't freeze at all and boating is possible all year round.

Re: Fish Names.

This may sound odd but my favorite fighting fish would have to be the bluegill and all his cousins lumped together by the term bream. Of course these fish are good in the lake but better if they are river fish which are real hearty fighters on the right tackle. I think it is a good thing they don't get as big as one of my other favorites catfish although I love catching anything that swims and each has it's own beauty and endearing qualities.

Hello Mountian boy
Lakes freezing in New Mexico  Who would know that! I thought it was warm there, No pike in the mountains here! I catch pike mostly on still baits. Large suckers and sardines/mackerel
on wire leaders with slip riggs. Although my largest pike last year 28 lbs was caught sight fishing with 3/8 oz glow prop jig and spot tail minnow on 8/lb test.
Never caught a cat fish, Peterfish but i bet they are lots of fun. Light tackle is the way to go. Makes a sporting chance for the fish, and a more memorable experience :)

Re: Fish Names.

i was just curious nosleep, you mentioned 4" of ice, then mentioned driving on ice. do you drive on a lake with just 4" of ice??? if not, how do you know when its safe to drive a vehicle on it? my only experience comes from watching 'Grumpy Old Men'...

and for SW charter fishing-its not that expensive, i don't think so anyway. i would go on a boat equipped for 4 chairs max(my opinion), but probably someone like the sure'nuff captains here or combee can give you more details on that.

Re: Fish Names.

Hello EBB
Cant drive on 4 inches of ice, only safe to walk on. (quote:eek:nly 4 inches of ice so far this winter. Last winter we were driving on 18 inches.)
"Not what i say, what i mean."
When winter starts and the ice freezes i always walk out and cut a hole to see how thick the ice is before venturing out to far. the ice around here gets reasonably thick by christmas, usually any were between 12 to 18 inches. It doesn't take long to get thick when it drops below -20 deg. the ice in january gets about 24" thick. I don't drive my truck on less than 12" and i make sure that i know the ice is consistent in its depth and there are no currents. They say you can drive a truck safely on 10" of ice, as long as its not my truck :D

Re: Fish Names.

EBB
I think salt water fishing (marlin ) would be expensive for me because of its location.
That type of fishing is so far away. plane fare
accommodation, boat rental or hire.If i was already
there maybe not so bad. I think it would be the ultimate fishing experience though, I would try to
catch them on a fly rod, that would be cool. maybe even a chance to land one.

Re: Fish Names.

good info nosleep.

here's an idea- start saving your pennies, invest in one of those vacuum sealing freezer bag devices... then catch us southern folks some salmon, seal 'em up, slap the dry ice on 'em, rent a uhaul, and tell the wife you're on a business trip - come on down and park in the middle of atlanta. sell the salmon and you'll have your fare to go eye to eye with a marlin in no time at all :D
