my new Eagle transducer cable is about three feet to short to locate my unit on the front of my boat. Can I cut the cable and splice in a three foot piece of wire without a problem?
Eagle wants 35.00 for an extention.

NO!!!!

Buy the $35 extention.. Or you may end up buying a new transducer, plus the extention, to do the job right the second time.. ;)

Actually, now that I think about it, try Cabela's or maybe Bass pro shops... I think they'll have the cable you need for less than $35...

I dont think I would cut into a cable unless it
was already damaged or cut. I have repaired a
cable on a Garmin that was struck cut and damaged
with no I'll side effects. But to put in an
extension would require a much greater area of
repair. It might give you interference. Spend the
35 dollars on an extension. Think of it as cheap
insurance.

Re: fish locator cable extention splice

this is purely a guess.

i bet (if you were in a fix) that you could use a roll of cat5 (shielded twisted pair stranded cabling) to extend the depthfinder cabling. i know there are considerations of impedence/etc, but as far as 'noise' on the line, that should take care of it... you'd need to possibly coat/protect the cabling for marine environments, but maybe that's it... just a thought. i'm not going to cut my depthfinder line to find out, though ;)

for instance, IF i had a cut line, i'd do that first. but the real problem will be in the joints. i'd probably solder with heatshrink tubing, and double over with another bigger diameter heatshrink tube for security...

a side effect might be the diff in impedence, which would require tuning the main unit. since i don't work on those units, and i haven't updated my FCC license since 91 i cannot accept responsibility for a fried unit :D

I would get the extension, but if my cable were cut I would splice it together, twist and solder the wires, use liquid electrical tape (about $5.00 a can at most marinas or auto parts stores) with an outer coating of heat srink.

If this is a fiberglass boat
How about installing the transducer to read through the bottom of the hull.

Davie
