Perhaps a daft question, but please bear with me.
I currently have a 6.6 metre sail boat with a Mercury 4 stroke outboard. I'm fairly new to sailing. I found the engine is a little underpowered when at sea.
A friend has offered me a Johnson-Evinrude 6hp Twin Cylinder (6 is apparently the max for my boat). It was, he thinks made in the 80s but cannot remember if it is 4 or 2 stroke. It is as clean as a whistle, and turns easily on the cord, although has not been used for some years.
I wish to keep the 4 as a back up motor, but if the Johnson is 2 stroke I do not have space for two fuel tanks in the locker.

the johnson is a 2 stroke, extremely dependable motor, will require a little maintainance, to put into service, read the awakening a sleeping outboard, in the FAQ forum. post model # and we can probably tell you the year, also does it have the long shaft for the sail boat?

Re: First post from a 'newbie'

Hi tashasdaddy.
Thanks for the reply.
Pretty sure it is a long shaft, which I do need. My current Mercury is long shaft.
I should be able to note the engine serial number to work out the year of manufacture.........
Now I know it is a 2 stroke, can you advise the fuel/oil mix ratio please. It will be of use for my friend who is selling even if I decide not to take it.
My snag is, as I wish to keep my Mercury 4hp/4stroke (which is only 7 yrs old & hardly used), I have the problem of getting two fuel tanks in my stern locker along with the batteries.
The 4HP is ample here on the River Vilaine, but at sea against the tide it does struggle a little.
Incidently my boat is being lifted out for the winter as I type, so I'm in no rush & have time to, perhaps re-arrange/modify the stern locker. I reckon that if the Johnson/evirudes are as good as you say I at least ought to give it a try to see the difference between 4hp & 6hp?
