We are trying to get into our first boat and are considering the 24 robalo walkaround w/twin 150 merc opti's or the 25 cobia w/a with a 225 Yamaha saltwater series. Any opinions on these or any boat comparable?

Re: first boat

Ahoy, Mag. Those are both very good boats with good powerplants. I don't know what your priorities are, but if you place quality and safety near the top of your list I suggest that you add a center console or walkaround Boston Whaler to your options. They are expensive boats, and worth every penny. No boat is safer or holds value better. If you price some used ones you will see what I mean. This testimonial is based on 33 years of experience with 4 Whalers. I paid $3100 for my first Whaler in 1968 and sold it in 1983 for $6500. What depreciation?? To be fair, there was an awful lot of inflation in those 15 years.

One other note: A well-cared-for Whaler, even 20 years old, is often an even better value than a new one. My current center console (Montauk 17) Whaler is a 1980 and every bit as good a boat as my son's 2000 Montauk 17.

BTW, I don't own any stock in Whaler or Brunswick and have no benefit to reap if you buy one.

Happy Boating.

JB

Re: first boat

Mag, I have a 79 Robalo when they were owned by AMF. Still in fine shape. I fished with my cousin on her new Robalo last weekend, I think it was a 21 ( although she said the centerline was almost 23)and it was a walkaround cabin. It felt very sturdy, with good sea keeping ability and I was very impressed on how easy it was to fish the ****pit with high gunwales. She has the optional padded bolsters which hit me just above the knee (I am 6'8') and that was wonderful.

Enjoy your Robalo, good choice.
