Hello all,I have a old Johnson Outboard, model number FD-10, serial #: 1472099. I am interested in turning my 2 line fuel system into a one line. I have seen various ways to do it, and I think I have decided to either drill and tap the cover or buy a modified cover that has a nipple so that I can use a modern fuel pump. So basically my first question is do they make a modified cover so that I don’t need to mess with drilling, tapping and making sure I’m still airtight? Second question is if I do need to drill and tap it what is the best way to seal the new fitting so I don’t lose any compression? And my last question is what kind or model fuel pump should I buy?

thank you in advanced.

Lots of opinions on that subject. But the easiest is just obtain a bypass cover from a newer motor, one that a OMC fuel pump will screw directly onto.

Um--- FD-10, that is a 1956 15hp. Minor differences between that and the 18hp that follows. Bypass cover is one of them. The 18 might be workable, I can't say for 100% sure. But 12hp Gale motors of the same year came from the factory with fuel pumps. Bypass cover for those is part # 552213, if you should be so lucky.

Otherwise, next best way is there is a hole part way through the existing cover that is easy to drill on through and tap with a 1/8" NPT pipe thread tap. Screw in a suitable hose nipple and you are all set for a pump that uses a pulse hose. There are several to choose from. Mikuni, B&S, Sierra, etc

I switched my 1957 5.5 hp Evinrude over to a single line recently. I used an Ashata Fuel Pump that's made out of aluminum ithat I bought on Walmart's website for $10.11 with free shipping. I like these better than the plastic Briggs & Stratton pumps that people are using for the conversion. I didn't need to use any plate to mount it with. I took the intake manifold off and removed the check valves and plugged up one of the check valve holes with a vacuum cap and the other hole supplies the pulse needed to operate the pump. Then I rerouted the vacuum line with a new line that went to the gas tank to the new fuel pump. I made some metal brackets to mount the pump with instead of using wire ties like some people are using in the videos on Youtube.

When I put it in the barrel to test It she cranked up on the 3rd crank and it runs great now. It starts on the 1st crank the majority of the time now.

I found a single line gas line connector on E-bay for $17.
