Faulty Fuel Hose

Hi All,

I have been running into this issue twice now in 3 years. The attached picture this hose I purchased last year brand new. When I was changing external fuel filter I noticed that when I pulled it off the plastic inside the hose was all scrambled inside, not allowing proper fuel flow. I am using the right diameter. My question is can I get a regular hose from a hardware store that does not have the plastic inside?

I think NAPA would even be better. I've never seen anything like that. I've also never seen "Fuel line" look like the one you're holding. I'm no marine engine expert, but I've been turning wrenches most of my life and that's a strange one to me!

This one came from bass pro, the one prior to that came from Wall Mart. Both units were new and came with the bulb. This is your regular fuel hose.

Ditto - that's not fuel hose. I did a google search for 'rubber hose plastic liner", and came up with some chemical hose products called Purflex PTFE hose that looks like what you have. It appears to be a product designed for transferring corrosive chemicals. They are specifically designed to withstand noxious chemicals, and work with multiple specialised fittings that are different from standard engine fittings.

I don't think hardware stores carry fuel hose, at least they don't in my area. They may carry the clear plastic syphoning hoses, but don't use those as they are inclined to collapse under the suction from a running engine.

Go to NAPA, an auto parts store, or a marina and ask for black fuel hose. It's inexpensive and is sold by the foot. Any reputable auto parts store or marina will know what you need.

We must have been posting at the same time. That's the problem - you picked engine parts from companies that may be great at what they do....but what they do isn't engine repair. Sounds like you bought a siphoning kit, and that definitely isn't regular fuel hose.

Regular fuel hose looks something like this (there are different kinds, but this will give you the idea):

No Title

So here is what I have purchased last two times To me who is new at boating this looks like a fuel line that goes from the tank to the outboard. I will go to an auto parts store and get something else. The good thing about all this is that I now have a good spare bulb

Interesting - that's obviously intended for use as a fuel line for an outboard. I guess if the hose can carry chemicals, it can carry fuel......but the way it is built it can't take being pushed onto a connecting nipple.

Those hoses were found on Mariner portable engines, gave too much fuel restrictions, with time the interior liner breaks into pieces and engine shuts down, been through this issue myself. Buy a proper fuel hose at auto stores, install primer bulb and both side connectors and boat happily forever.

Happy Boating

Don't buy fuel hose at an auto parts store. Go to a boat place and get US coast guard approved marine fuel hose. Its different from auto hose for the safety of you and your family.

I bought NAPA fuel hose circa 1980. The boat spent every minute of its life outdoors.
Boat has been inactive for a few years now and I certainly don't suggests using the hose for so many years
Son has the boat now, I will suggest he get new hose if he hasn't already.

If I go to my local marine shop they will sell me the same thing BassPro and Wall Mart did.
I am not sure what is the difference between a car fuel hose and a boat fuel hose :) care to explain?

I've seen this situation many times on these forums. I would buy any quality fuel hose that is made for todays ethanol fuels and it will also work with oil mixes too. Auto parts store will have the correct fuel line like shown in pckeen post #6 above... And happy boating... JMHO!

My second on this!.....the potential for problems with non-marine fuel hoses is a real issue....

The hose you show in photo is Silverado2000- this line is a laminated fuel hose that had nothing but problems with delamination and fuel starvation problems. It was replaced by Silverado 4000 about 5-6 years ago, which is a much more reliable hose. I can't believe that wallyworld is still selling this stuff- but what can you expect from a store that sells underwear that wont stay in place

We received a recall from Sierra about 3 yrs ago because the packaging of their fuel hose caused kinks that would not come out and caused fuel restriction . WELL, last year a customer came in saying it seemed as though his boat was starving for gas and would run at WOT properly and that he had just replaced the fuel line on his tank with one from Wally World. Instinctively I did the usual visual inspection and noticed the fuel line had many kinks in it. I ask him if he still had the packaging from the hose kit and he did. Guess what? It was the same style we had to return to Sierra !!

Type A1 and A2 are Fire Rated hoses, and B1 and B2 are Non-Fire Rated.
Type A1 and B1 are Fuel Hoses, and A2 and B2 are Vent/Fill Hoses.

Moeller Fuel line assemblies only specify
"...A compounded, EPA and CARB approved UV-resistant hose and primer bulb..." for their aftermarket fuel line assemblies.

33CFR183.501 (Fuel Systems) does not apply to Outboard engines, The OB guys can uses anything that serves the purpose.
Type B1 would be recommended for OB fuel Line use. A1 even better.

Merc also used the lined hose and issued a TSB on it that any with red imprint writing are bad and needed replaced. Serria also had issues as posted and also with their blue fuel hose. Regular black fuel hose from auto parts will work for a while till it starts to degrade internally as small rubber particles stop up filters and in summer they absorb heat and can cause vapor lock from laying in splash well...Best to use a OEM line even through they are pricey....

Went to a marine shop and got a fuel line that they use. They say that this liner in this new hose it rated to 15% Ethenol, the old one I brought with me he says was rated for 10%

I installed it so we will see when the season starts...
