Re: faded paint

First thing you need to figure out is if the gel-coat is just faded or has the clear coat thinned out due to UV damage, If you run your hand over the Metal flake area lightly and feel the surface is rough like a fine sandpaper clearcoat has got thin and what your feeling is the actual metal flake coming through, this will also appear dull, which can be clear coated again, If the surface feels smooth, then I would first try a really good marine polish , not wax or rubbing compound, just a good polish and lots of rubbing by hand...I did this with my 84 Baja Sport and is came up new I polished it 3 or 4 time a year and kept the sun off it when not in use and it stayed nice and Glossy until I sold it in '96

I have a 93 cobalt with UV fading. I just bought a buffer and 3M fiberglas polish. What polish did you use to bring your colors back?

Re: faded paint

My clearcoat has started to blister and flake off in places. I realize I will have re-clearcoat it, but what is the best way to prep it?

Re: faded paint

When I did my baja I used mequires products, which i still use today on my Wellcraft,If you think you need to clear coat the boat a good quality poly-urethane such a Dupont can be used, but will need to be sprayed, which means you will need to strip all the hardware from boat including rubrail, and plenty of wet sanding to feather edge if you already have peeling. Once several coats of clear has been applied you get to do more wet sanding then some polishing,This can take 30-40 man hours, but the results are outstanding if done right.....the cheap an fast way is to use vertiglass.

I still have my 82 Baja ss 16 footer with 115 merc, with black metal flake that still rocks only reason I still have it.<br />The 84 sport was that 16 or the 17 1/2 and was that the red metalflake?
