I have an EZ Loader single axle trailer that is supposed to have surge brakes.Someone mentioned i should be checking the brake fluid reservour for fluid but I can't find one on either wheel hub. Where is it?

Re: EZ Loader Trailer

Look on the top of the coupler near where the trailer hitch ball connects at. There will either be a cap that you remove to fill the reservoir with brake fluid or a cover that you remove to get to the reservoir cap. Also, if your trailer has surge brakes, you should see a small tube (brake line) connecting to the back side of the coupler and to the backing plate on the hub.

Hi Burp,
I found the EZ Trailer brake fluid cap just where you said I would. When I removed the cap,the fluid reservoir was only about half full and it was very black.( looked more like thin oil than brake fluid. How full should the reservoir be and
should I use regular auto brake fluid?
Thanks for your help!
P Sully

Re: EZ Loader Trailer

Brake fluid is normally clear or a very light color. To me if the brake fluid is black in color, it's contaminated or it's deteriorated some of the rubber seals/hoses in the braking system. I'd start with a good quality DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid and flush/bleed the brake lines till I got clean brake fluid out. Fill the brake fluid reservoir to 1/4" from the top and don't let it go empty when bleeding the brakes.

p sully,

Brake fluid absorbs water. When it has water in it, it turns black.

You need to get that stuff out of there.

Here is how to bleed. You will need at least two other helpers.

1. Block the trailer wheels, front and back.

2. Hitch the trailer to the tow vehicle.

3. Put the tow vehicle in reverse.

4. Have some one crack open one of the brake bleeders. When the surge coupling has bottomed out in its rearward travel, close the bleeder.

5. Put the tow vehicle in forward, have someone pour fresh fluid in the reservoir while the coupler is extending forward.

6. Repeat, until you have fresh fluid coming out of both bleeders.

Caution: be very gentle in the rearward and forward movements of the tow vehicle.

Hooking the tow vehicle to the trailer sounds dangerous to me..

If it's this type of actuator you can simply install your trailer hitch ball, and draw bar
