Exhaust Super Hot!

1998 mercruiser 5.0 220 HP w/ alpha one gen 2. Was running boat, smelled something funny, stopped, popped cover and found the left exhaust housing was extremely hot as compared to right housing. Found hole in the rubber connector for the elbow in the back elbow on left housing. Tried to creep back to port but the hole got worse and the housing hotter. Started taking on lots of water almost sank 10 miles off shore. My question is where did the heat come from? Did the hole make the heat or did the heat make the hole. Could something be clogged? All gauges remained fine, no over heating.

If the engine didn't overhead then it's PROBABLY not the water pump. But as with EVERY overhead you need to start there.
Your also going to need to pull the risers and check the risers output ports for cloggs and the manifold to riser passages for cloggs as well. If something is clogged then you need to replace both manifolds and risers as a set. Good luck!

Nothing was hot to the touch except for the left exhaust riser.

Last one I had the owner tried to power off a sand bar and managed to fill one manifold with sand. Risers do get clogged ,no water flow + hot ,dry exaust will melt a rubber coupling.

Thank you, from my research i have come to the same conclusion. will this heat affect anything down stream? ie, pipe, housing or prop? any information will help as i prepare to rip that side apart to find clog.

Ayuh,... It no doubt Burnt up All the rubber parts in the exhaust,...
I'd also pull the drive,+ inspect there too...Could have burnt up the Impeller...

Rubber parts in exhaust? Impeller makes sense to me, the manual doesn't show much for rubber below or in front of exhaust housing.

Rubber parts in exhaust?

Ayuh,... There's atleast 2 Boots,+ the Shutters....On each side...You already burnt a Hole clean through 1 of them...
Then the Bellows or Tube,+ whatever is in the exhaust cavity of the drive...

Excellent, i will check this all out but i think most of the rubber below the boot below will be OK. After i plugged original hole that i almost sank from no other water was coming into boat. This is what i'm hoping for anyway. Thank you.
