Greetings:

I have a '86 Yachtwin w/electric start that cranks s l o w or not at all. Yet, it starts/runs fine with 1 or 2 pulls of the manual start rope. I had a bad battery which I replaced with new...same problem. Any ideas?

Thanks,

You may have to remove the starter motor. disassemble it and clean and oil it. Inspect it for wear.

I simply did without the elec start last season. Now that the boat is in drydock and spring is not far off, it's time to tackle the motor. I bought a service manual and now suspect worn brushes. Any idea where I can just buy a replacement starter motor for this engine? I realize we're talking around $100 or more, but it's a bolt on solution...far better than chasing starter parts all over the workbench.

Bob

Yup. You can get one here. 18-5617, $160 + shipping.
The brush kit, 18-5698, is probably a whole lot cheaper.

NAPA autoparts should be able to get you these parts too (same part numbers). Your local Johnny/Rude dealer will be able to get you OEM parts (different numbers).

I think yer lookin at about $260 for a new starter seastream. Where as you could pull the starter and replace the cap assembly for around $35. This is off course there is not huge maladies with the starter inards.

Polish the commutator and install the new end cap assembly. Just as good as new.

End cap assembly part number - 386678. Should be able to order from any Bomby dealer.

Good Luck.

dude
why not trouble shoot the starting system as per your service manual?
the 9.9 had a startswicth and a nuetral switch that carry the full cranking load. doa voltage droptest acrossed allof them before condeming the starter. a planned trouble shooting approach is a lot faster and less frustrating than a leap and a prayer
good luck and keep posting

OK, guys, you got it. Since I bought the service manual, I'm gonna start with replacing the brushes first (likely the originals are in there). I also have a part time alternator, there, I suspect the rectifier. The rectifier is about $28, dunno about the starter brushes but they're likely less than $20. Thanks for the advice and encouragment.

Bob

Seastream....look in the service manual. There is a ohm meter test in there for the rectifier. Simple to do. May save you the price of a new rectifier.
