One of the rams on my tilt and trim for a 60hp two cylinder 1981 evinrude is not operating.
The ram closest to the cylinder is doing all the work, which seems to be okay, but I would feel better if i could fix the other ram.
I loosened the bolts on the hydraulic line between the two rams and there was oil at both rams so it seems like oil is getting to the far ram.
Any ideas on what the problem could be?
Thanks, dave.

Re: evinrude twin ram tilt and trim problem

The ram farthest from the motor/pump is the trim ram. It only functions as a ram for about 1/3 of it total stroke, after this it is just a follower,(and trim gauge sender). These rams are somewhat prone to internal leakage problems. If your motor will trim out at WOT, this ram is working properly, if not you may have a problem with the ram. Other idea, if the output of the pump is low due to slow motor, internal restriction, restricted lines, leaky tilt ram(internal) not enough fluid VOLUME will reach the trim ram (farthest from pump)causing a weak or nonexesistant trim function. Is you system a prestolite or a calico motor? The calico motors had problems where they would run slow, but would sound OK This can be checked with a amp meter checking that motor draw is within specs. Yours should not have a calico, but I have seen many installed where they should not have been. I would check draw no matter what motor, and make sure its within spec. These t'n't systems require good volume to work (hence the larger pump than the chry-force-suzuki prestolite system)anything that reduces volume will cause lazy action of the trim ram.
