Hey guys I’m new to the forum
but I’m going to be trying to do a lot of work to my moms evinrude 9.9 over the winter. To say the motor had been acting up is an understatement. For quite some time now if I start the motor in neutral it often is already moving forward until I put it into reverse and then back to neutral. Only at that point do I get true neutral.

i was out duck hunting this weekend and I would start the motor in neutral, the cord would snap half way like it was in forward and the boat would be in gear forwards. I really have no idea what would cause this but I have a suspicion it’s in the lower unit somewhere. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks!

Sounds like the shift rod coupling found between the lower unit and exhaust housing is not assembled correctly.

So do you think over the years that it has come apart somehow? I have the motor home for the winter so I will most likely remove the lower unit to see what’s going on

Presumably over the years the gear case has been removed a number of time to replace the water pump impeller.

Its quite possible, as racerone suggests, that the joint between the upper and lower shift rods has not been assembled correctly. Both rods must be inserted into the clamp far enough for the pinch bolts to be located in the recesses at their ends.

See page 8-87 of the manual at http://www.boatinfo.no/lib/evinrude/manuals/1971-1989johnsonevinrude.html#/0

Also check that the lower rod has not been partially unscrewed from the components deep inside the gearcase

119------You are saying there is something wrong with the gears.-----So it is up to you to listen and investigate.---Maybe start by checking gear oil in the lower unit.------Or bring it over as I have more than a dozen good lower units.---- All the used parts that could ever be needed to fix that motor.
