Hi, i have a 1964 40 hp evinrude big twin, i just bout a new magneto ignition system for it and am going to install it, but i was checking out the armarture plate and there are only 2 wires coming from underneat it presumably kill wires seeing as how there smaller. One wire goes to this insulated cylenoid looking thing, and the other disapears, i think to the ignition switch maby? But I dont think i have a charging coil? It has electric start, but not electric shift, and there is no place for a stator or alternator, and theres no wires going to the engine besides the 2 kill wires, and temperature senser that dont look like they would charge anything. Maby i will take off the armature plate, but it dosnt look like theres anything under there? Please help. thanks.

Re: evinrude charging system trouble

You probably don't have a charging system. If you do, it is a belt driven DC generator. They look much like the electric starter and sit on the other side of the carburetor opposite the starter.

The generators were standard equipment on the electric shift motors, an optional accessory on the others.
