Just purchased an Evinrude 6hp motor and having trouble finding an ID plate anywhere. Found a no. stamped in a round section of engine block which reads "A0057120" and is probably serial no. Can anyone assist with year ID or give any cluses where else to find a model no.?

Thanks Jim,

I can see two holes where there could have been an ID plate rivetted to side of mounting bracket but alas not there now...is it possible to ID from the serial no. alone? Bo.

The best I can figure out is early 70's - we don't have much of an Austrailian S/N base here. Go over to The Old OMC Site and have a look at their catalogs. See if you can get a visual ID.

Tell us what you find!

Re: Evinrude 6hp fisherman - year ID

Thanks Paul - I've looked at catalogs which end at 1975 and too me the decal design on the engine cover looks newer. The guy I bought the motor from thought it was from the 1980's but you kinda take these things with a pinch of salt when people try to talk up their motor.

The lower motor is blue and engine cover has blue bottom (about 1/3 way up) with top white, EVINRUDE has a red strip on top and blue underneath with stripes turning to join at beginning and end of name. On tiller end of cover has plastic inset FISHERMAN on a plate which is 5 1/2 x 3/4" in size. On opposite side has evinrude logo, stylised red "E" above blue "E" inside a blue square border...wish I could get a photo to you.

Re: Evinrude 6hp fisherman - year ID

All the posts I can find suggest A005nnnn numbers are from the early 70's. I can't find much to go on, but I've got a A003nnnn number that's fairly certainly '68, a A009nnnn number that's probably a '74, and a A010nnnn number that can't be more than a '76.
Is it possible that the engine comes from an earlier outboard, or that the cover is from a later one? Dark blue was used on the lower parts of the motor between '69 and '71? Also, do the spark plug wires lead up underneath the flywheel, or do the run into externally mounted coils?
Feel free to email me photos and I can post them for you, if thats possible.

I guess anything is possible! The spark plug leads run up underneath the flywheel. If it's any help there are some part numbers cast or stamps inotvarious components, as follows:

flywheel - 318 676
Cast base where motor is bolted - 278 619
engine plate (above plugs) - 312 714

Will take some pics tonight and try to email tomorrow.

Ok, that's helpful. The engine itself uses the old style under flywheel magneto. They were only used on 6hp fishermans up to 1976. In '77 they went to external ignition coils.

I'll try to see if those numbers help at all.

email is: paul.moir@ns.sympatico.ca

Ok, here they are:

http://xs20.xs.to/pics/05111/evinrude001.jpg

http://xs20.xs.to/pics/05111/evinrude002.jpg

http://xs20.xs.to/pics/05111/evinrude003.jpg

http://xs20.xs.to/pics/05111/evinrude004.jpg

http://xs20.xs.to/pics/05111/evinrude005.jpg

It looks to me like its all been repainted since the welsh plug is blue and the face plate had paint all over it. But I don't see any evidence of the metallic blue they used in '68 and prior.

That rewind starter is '72 or earlier (the top bracket changes in '73).

So far that's the best I can do.

EDIT: That cover matches the 1970 cover exactly. The decals are unique to that year (I think), and the 'Fisherman' logo on the insert came out in '70 (as opposed to the '6' insert). Also, the '72 choke knob looks a little different than yours.

Re: Evinrude 6hp fisherman - year ID

Thanks alot Paul, All makes sense...the old OMC site was missing the catalog for '70 so I had no visual comparison for this year. Your info re: S/N suggests right around 1970.

Would the maintenance manual for this motor cover a few different years, in other words, what would be the best manual I should be looking for?

The motor has been idle for around 18 months but looking at appearance their seems to be an old oil leak in lower sections so seals may need replacing around prop shaft. I ran motor as test and had decent jet of water exiting motor - I assume this model has an impeller? Any recommendations on things to check would be appreciated!

Re: Evinrude 6hp fisherman - year ID

I dont' see any significant part changes until '74 (new piston design, 2 rings rather than 3) so I think it would be safe to use a 1970 exclusive manual even if we did get the year off by one or two. The very best manual is the Factory one, but reprints of it are rather expensive. However, sometimes they come up on ebay used for a fraction of the price of new. Here's a good deal:
1970 Parts and Service
Don't worry about the 'Johnson' label. They are identical except for the paint & trim between the mid-50s and the 90s.
Fortunately, shipping literature is usually not very expensive.
Here's where you can get reprints:
TheOutboardWizard
Mastertech
Marine Engine
Ken Cook
I also have the Seloc manual that covers that engine - it's alright too and you might find it locally. The factory manuals definitely worth the extra money though.

If that stuff leaking out of the engine smells like petrol at all, it's probably just unburnt fuel/oil finding it's way out. You see it all the time on 2-strokes, esp after a long run at low speed. Check the lower unit oil for water/milkyness to be sure.
Good call on changing the impeller - yes it does have one. The only other thing that's want to go is the ignition system (coils age and crack), but if it was running recently, they must have been serviced already. The capability to produce a 1/4" - 3/8" long spark prooves a good ignition system.

That looks just like my 1970 6 h/p fisherman rude that I use quite a bit. Good solid little motors

Thanks Paul and Bubbakat...Thanks Paul for the ebay link - definitely a good deal. Very hard to find original manuals over here so I did the deal and look forard to getting stuck into a service when I receive the manual!

Anyone know whether there were any major differences between the two '70 model runs being 6002 & 6003 - this is the final piece in the puzzle.

The 6003 is the longshaft engine to fit a 20" transom boat. There's an extension piece that fits in between the lower unit and the midsection, as well as a longer driveshaft, shift shaft and a water tube extension.

Re: Evinrude 6hp fisherman - year ID

Thanks for all your help, Paul in particular. Let me say what a fantastic resource this board is for an outboard newbie! I've played around with plenty of old Italian scooter engines in a previous life, so these little two strokes shouldn't be too bad...previous experience has definitely shown the value of a good manual which can save a heap of heartache and a helluva lot of effort in showing the simplest way to get a job done!!! Thanks again and I'm sure I'll have some questions down the track!
