Hi,

I own what I believe is a 1983 Evinrude 35 HP. The numbers on it are E35RCTS, C7165584. So looking that up I think it's a 1983. Is this 35 HP rated at the crank or prop?

A friend is selling a 1995 Johnson 30 HP. I'm curious if this newer 30 HP would push my boat any faster?

Thanks.IMG_8744.jpg

As I was told back in the day, when Yamaha entered the outboard market they started rating them at the prop. Evan rude had to switch for some reason so that they could compare the motors I guess. Pretty sure the 83 is at the crank but I'm not sure because that's right about the time that things started changing. As far as the 30 and 35 goes like the man said above it will probably be very similar when driving the boat.

Evinrude Johnson switched in I think 86 and the 35hp became a 30hp

Unless something is wrong with your 35 why bother?? Biggest difference might be a couple mph at best.....if your motor has issues then an upgrade might be a good idea. Either way your dealing with a used motor so anything could happen. The motors made in the years you have were considered to be well made and reliable if maintained, so how well does your current motor run??

The 35 is indeed a Crank rated motor, and the 30 is a Prop rated motor. There is a 99.99% chance that they produce the same power. Even if there was a 5hp difference, that would be about 1mph less

I would get the 95 over the 83 simply because of age and lack of wear .

Your friend is selling it, and you know the history.

Find out what he wants, then list yours for the price he's asking.
