I am doing a tune-up on my old Chrysler 1976 45hp model # 451HH. I know how to set the spark advanced with the spark control rod and test light what I need to know is how the find the 28* BTDC WITH OUT a gauge or a special tool
First some back ground I have one mark on the flywheel and a gauge on top of the intake From what can tell the mark is for the 28*BTDC and NOT TDC but I really do not know for sure
This is what I am thinking and PLEASE correct me if I am wrong
To set the timing I turn the crank shaft until the points are all the way open then I set the point gap to .020 then I install the flywheel and turn it until the grove (line) on the flywheel lines up with the larger middle line on the timing gauge
At this point it should be set to 28* BTDC and I make the adjustment on the spark control rod with the test light to set the spark advanced.

So is the grove (line) on the flywheel for TDC or BTDC?

If the grove (line) is not for BTDC the how do I establish BTDC?

Tanks for the help in advanced
-Richard
aka Lagoon Bandit

If you dont get a response here you may want to try the Marine Doctor HERE . He has 25 years experience as an outboard mechanic and if very familiar with Chryslers.

to set the timming I just gaped the points at .020 (when the hump of the cam open the points that when I gaped) the I turn the fly wheel till the line on the flywheel lined up with the middle timming mark on the gauge then the adjust the spark control rod till the 1 point barley opened and that was it now she run 27.5 mph on the water acording to my gps
-Richard
