Hi, I am a dutch woman and I got asked a few days ago wehther I
could find out the english translation of a some sailing words. As
the words are specific words I did not know any translation but I
would like to try and explain what I mean so maybe anyone could tell
me the english word.

1. If you picture a mast with 2 sails you have a front and a back
sail, the bottom of the back sail has a name......what is the
english name?

2.what do you call the side of the back sail close to the mast/

3. In the mast you find things attached to the sail which slide into
the mast and thus you can pull the sail up, what do you call them
things?

I would be very gratefull if anyone could help me out here, so I
could tell my friend the english words so he can order parts for his
sailing boat, yours sincerely Erna
e.butcher@home.nl

Erna, all I know is that the bottom edge of any 3 sided sail is called the "foot". The edge connected to the mast is called the "luff", and the trailing edge is called the "leach"...As far as the slides go, most folks call them "slides or slugs" hope that helps a little...
