hey guys, i am really in a pickle now. My neighbor was helping me this morning and and we were testing the starter and solenoid since that was causing the problem. he hooked up a 12v test light to the starter, i hit the key, it caused a spark at the test light and not i have no elecrical power, depth fnder, lights, and ignition do not work. what could have caused this and what do i need to look for or do. any help would be appreciated

Re: engine starter update

in line fuse near starter solenoid blew. use a meter not a test light.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Re: engine starter update

i will check that, what would cause the depthfinder and other electronics not to work, they are both hooked up to starting battery

Re: engine starter update

after lookign at the motor i found the inline fuse, 20 amp. i assume this is the only one under the cowling? it was by the solenoid and had a red sleeve covering it. must have done something to the battery to becuase i took it and had a load test put on it and said it needed to be replaced. are ther any other fuses i should check or look and and if so where are they locarted. 1992 60hp evinrude

Re: engine starter update

that is the only fuse, it controls the starting circuit, and the wiring in the control box. nothing else should be connected to it. someone, may have run the hot feed to the electronics off the controls.
