Engine Dies At Idle In Water Not On Land

Today when we put the boat in, it started great (with the warm up lever up) but when I put it down to move the boat in gear it dies. The motor runs fine on the hose however. We have since figured out that the idle speed needs adjustment. It's a 1978 Evinrude 85 hp model 85895C.

Found a diagram of the upper carb (It has dual carbs) -

One other thing. On the carb I found a idle restriction plug, and an idle orifice screw. Would adjusting any of these help? I have already adjusted the throttle rod as far as it will go...

Any help is appreciated! Want to get the boat in for the 4th!

Buy a mannual for your motor, it will answer most "How do I ....." questions with photos to show what to do.

I agree 100%, however I really want to put the boat in for the fourth of July, and unfortunately only have a day to do so... But buying a manual is definatly my next step.

Just need a quick fix fast!

Idle speed is adjusted by ignition advance,
idle screws are for air/fuel mixture.

Do you have any fishing line wrapped around the prop shaft & unseen? This will not allow you even put it in gear & keep it running if in the water because of the increased resistance.

Thanks everyone!

I figured out how to adjust it, and I can bring it down to an idle just fine.
