This question was asked in my build thread, but I thought this may cast a broader net.

I'm looking for some opinions on using Peal and Seal inside the engine compartment. Originally, the boat had a foil faced sound deadener/thermal barrier on the insides of the vertical deck lid supports. I would say the panels are 6-8" away from the engine. It looked to be a butyl rubber/ asphalt mat with foil facing. It was heavily stapled onto the panels. Lowes sells Peal and seal(for roofing applications) for $17.00 for 6"x25' roll. That is extremely cheap compared to the name brand sound/heat deadeners. Do you think peal and seal would work for this application?

Foil faced heat insulation?

This shows approximate distance from the engine.

Re: Engine compartment insulation

This same product was discussed on some hot-rodding forums, and the consensus was that it isn't well suited for vertical applications (and I would presume even worse if it were the bottom of a cover horizontally), as the adhesive softens and droops in heat.

They suggest DynaMat, but that's some expensive stuff! I will face this situation at some point in my build as well. I'm interested in the other suggestions you get. Maybe foil-faced urethane panel? That's home-store stuff too. Or the foil-faced fiberglass duct covers for HVAC?

Re: Engine compartment insulation

I PM'd Cc254. That was some impressive work! If it worked in that application it will be more than adequate for mine. I don't need the sound deadening, just the fire resistive/heat deflection properties. I'm assuming it was used to keep the heat away from lifejackets and other stowable items. I have stainless steel staples to help it stay on the panels too.
