I am looking at two very similar early 90's vintage boats, one has a Merc 150 and the other a Suzuki 140. Boats are within $400 of each other. Does anyone have opinions on the outboard types as to good bad or otherwise ?

Both good motors....... I would go through both of them with a compression gauge and examine them carefully. Do you have parts support/repair support locally for both?

Just be advised of this........ MANY places will NOT repair older outboard motors (due to age) which make them DIY projects......... I suggest you ask those questions via telephone.

Here in this area there are a small (very small) handful of people who work on older motors.

If the Mercury is in good shape I would lean towards that one.

^^^ Very important. Around me there is only 1 shop within 100 miles that will work on any older outboard(older than '97), any others in the area will only take mercs and only if they feel like it.

As long as they are both in good shape that is your main concern but you won't be disappointed with either. :)

Assuming these are 2 strokes I'd go with the Merc hands down.

i agree the suzuki,s were very fuel thirsty. my 1986 merc 135 uses 1/3 the gas of the 1992 suzuki 150 i had.plus the merc,s are bullit proof if you get rid of the oil injection and the idle stabilizer module.
