There are hundreds of ways to rig a rod for fishing. I also feel that there is no 1 perfect way to do it. Depends on where you are, what type of water your in, time of year, the weather etc... My kids have good luck with perch by using a light weight then a hook with piece of night crawler, while I use a texas style rig for bass. This works in our lake but might not be as good in another lake. The best thing to do is talk with the local fishers and try different things if 1 thing doesn't work try another.

if you're using a bobber, I recommend split shot 3 or 4" above the hook, just enough to stand the bobber up but not pull it under.

If you're using live minnows, a good rig is an egg sinker followed by a glass bead and a barrel swivel, then a 12 or 18" leader, then the hook, and no bobber. The swivel lets the minnow swim around without twisting your line & the bead keeps the sinker from cutting the knot.

Otherwise, tightlining live bait without a bobber, I think the sinker at the end of the line & the hook at whatever depth you want to fish. that lets you feel a strike better.

If you're talking about soft plastics, that's a whole nuther can o' worms! :)

Not sure if you have a fishfinder, but they can tell you alot on how the fish are feeding so that you can position your bait in front of them.

Also take a look at the inherent terrain of the lake. If it has a subtle current through a creek channel a bait that is in one place will appear un natural to the wise ole fish that usually have to do a little chasing for a meal.

I ususally have two or three rods in the boat rigged a different way so that when I learn the prevailing conditions, the most appropriate rod is just ready for the bait.

Different species are known to have a developed method of feeding and therefore makes targeting them with specific rigging methods. However, don't be afraid to experiment since there are always times when something different has potential of working well. This past weekend, I fished a walleye tournament and my partner caught a 6.5 lb catfish near the surface with an x rap. If I were targeting catfish it certainly wouldn't have been casting an x rap.

Be aware that in Michigan it is illegal to attach a weight below a multipointed hook, on a single hook it can only be below the hook if it is attached to a 3' leader

This is how I rig up for Walleyes or Bass for that matter most of the time. I will put a split shot or two above the snelled beaded spinner thingy and vary it anywhere from 1 to 4 feet above the hook until I find what distance is working. ( the hook point can also be buried in the worm)
DaleT, That leader you reference needs to be at least 3"(inches) long, not 3'(feet).
