DT 140 Prop Shaft Stripped

Okay the other day I took my boat out for the first time in like 4 months. It wasn't running very great while in low RPMs so the only way I could get the boat to run was to go full throttle before it could putter out. I am guessing that the carbs need to be cleaned. Anyway, I drove a few miles and dock. When I went back to the boat I started it up but it would go. The engine would rev up but I wasn't moving. I tilted the motor up and noticed that I did not have a prop and the shaft was stripped and warped. It lookes like someone tries to chizzle the end of the shaft into a spear. Obviously the shaft is no good. I am guessing that having too much pressure on the shaft too soon is wha caused this from going full throttle so quickly. Anyway, my motor is a 1996 Suzuki DT-140. DEoes anybody know where I can find a new shaft, how much it will cost and how to install it? Thanks

Re: DT 140 Prop Shaft Stripped

It almost sounds like you stripped the rubber hub on the prop and not the shaft but without pictures or other conformation it is just my guess. Was the prop nut still present? If so what you most likely see is the rubber hub material on the shaft.

If you must go with a shaft replacement Browns Point has it for $233 then you will have to pay someone to install it or be a fairly good mechanic to do it yourself http://store.brownspoint.com/dt140/fig046-1408601.asp .

Another alternative is to replace the lower unit. PM me, I have one. I also have a prop.

You know what? My hub was stripped. It continued to strip and I actually had to replace it before. In fact I bought a new hub right before it stripped but I didn't replace it right away because it was running. How much do you think the shaft would cost and also installation? Also is Browns Point in the Panhandle of Florida. If so then I think that my Uncle Shirley Brown owned it he passed away a few years ago so my cousin owns it now. If it is the same company.

Browns Point Marine is in NJ. Ordering the part is $233 plus shipping. I have no idea how much is would cost to have it replaced.

Do you need to replace the propeller shaft, is that what is broken? I'm just wondering if you see the chewed up rubber from the hub on the shaft and are thinking it is part of the shaft. The picture of the exploded prop view is small but it shows the parts associated with a prop. One typically can not take it apart without screwing something up.

If you could take a picture it would be great.
