Hi all, my dad just pulled the trigger and purchased a brand new boat. Im now trying to help him sell off his 1974 16' starcraft deep V. Anyone have any advice on selling it? We have no idea what its worth or how to even go about posting something like this. I thought about Facebook marketplace but the boat has been his baby since it was new and the thought of someone not taking care of it worries him. Facebook just seems overwhelming to him as he doesn't want some kids buying it and trashing it. (I know I know, "kids" is relative to man that's in his mid 70s) Any advice on making this process easier for him would be great. Thank you all. ***Also, I hope this is the right thread for this topic.

Well NADA claims it's value around $1700. boat alone, no trailer or motor.

I can only think of selling on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist or local newspaper classifieds.

Maybe you can handle the listing and selling for him?

Honestly if he wants to control what happens to the boat, just keep it. It sounds like it's still special to him. Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist are going to be the best options, and price based on what's available there.

Old Starcraft's usually end up in the hands of fisherman, and they are very desirable for that.. If it's water ready, I'd expect you could get $2,000 for it or more. IF your dad was ok that it would probably end up getting destroyed with fishing gear. And I would call it being destroyed by your dad's terms I think... holes for fishing gear, down riggers, rod holders, fish finders ect....

I just spent $1,600 on a Holiday 14 that had a ton of fisherman fixes, and have probably $2k into turning it back into a pleasure craft that is still fish able

The 1st question - is it aluminum or glass?
If alum it has "some" value.
If glass not much.

It all depends on condition, what model it is and how it’s rigged.
Hull model, condition?
Motor make, size, year, condition?
Trailer included? Good shape?
Covers, tops, accessories?

It could be worth $1k or $ 10k

put up some pics?

Thanks for the great responses! I do plan on helping him do this. No matter the circumstance behind the sale, he will certiantly be involved. Thats why I was looking at avoiding Facebook. My idea was to be the middle man and do the online stuff, but in the end, he's going to have all the answers, so he's going to have to take the phone calls. It's a 74' fiberglass 16' deep v, closed bow, original 100 hp Evinrude outboard. Original split trailer, newly painted. I'll try to get some pics. Thought I had some but can seem to find them at the moment.

70s glass boats selling at a premium?
Actually yes. Seems everyone around here might be checking NADA, the selling prices are up there as not many head to the far off marines looking for new boats. I live in a very rural area in NH surrounded by lakes.

I had to drive to Maine to score a deal, but on a fixer upper.

Just remember there is no for sale, used boats & parts sale section on iboats forums.

There is a paid ad iboats for sale section but w/out a paid ad running, sales and ads are prohibited thru the forum.

In this area, the aluminum version would be more. If his boat was garage kept, good transom and good floors, it might be an easy sell. If it needs all that to be replaced, he might be hard pressed to have someone take it. That motor is or is close to vintage, so only a small handful of people may be interested.

Totally understood. Just need some advice as I know nothing about what the boat is worth. In our eyes its vintage and precious, but our opinion doesn't matter, Its the market. I need some good advice so I can reasonably back up the asking price and make sure we aren't being shorted or aren't over pricing with our heart. This is why I chose a starcraft specific forum.

There is nothing wrong , that I'm aware of, with any part of the boat or motor. Im sure some people have their projects they would like to do if they owned it, but truthfully nothing needs done to it. I dont believe much involved in a restore. I would love to post pictures as I originally started this forum for help from those who know Starcraft, but now im a little worried its going to get removed if I do. So here's my question, let's say its in immaculant condition with all original equipment. Is a 1974 16' fiberglass Starcraft considered a "desirable classic", or is it just one of those "old boats" that we should just be happy someone wants to buy it?

You should be able to find some ads for boats for sale in your area. You could also look up pricing on NADA,

The problem is location

What some one some where would pay for an x condition xyz boat xx yrs old doesnt extrapolate well to what some one where ever you are would pay.

What I could reasonable buy or sell the same exact boat here in WV is likely to be different then your selling price, possibly drastically different.

And asking price doesnt always match selling price.

For a few thousand, I'd keep it and find some place well covered to store it. But everyone has to do what works for them.

Good luck

My point exactly, widely different pricing.

And most of those are aluminum not fiberglass. IMO, a 74 glasser isnt valued the same as a 74 aluminum boat of similar size
Yeah, that was my biggest issue, but I can accept it knowing that I atleast sought out information from people who are knowledgeable, here. Heck, I didn't even know aluminum was an option. I just thought what you see is what you get. Either way, I know he would love to keep it but he doesn't have the room. Right now he pays to have it stored through the winter and he's not wanting to do it with both, let alone adding the summer to the old boat. He's finally realized you just have to let things go. If I had a pole barn I could keep it in, I would never let the thing go. We just aren't in that position. On that, I think you all helped me with the second part which was where to sell it. I'll probably find some dedicated sites like smartmarine. Sites I know I can get a broad reach vs local focus. It did seem like some of those had been there awhile. This may be harder than I thought. Ill have to ease him into the process.
