I am looking for a replacement starter motor and have come across some that have gears with 8 teeth, 9 teeth and 11 teeth. Does the number of teeth on the gear make a difference?

How do I find a compatible starter motor? My engine is a 55HP Chrysler Model 5552 Serial: 2194

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes..... Make sure you get the same (teeth) starter. If you change number in teeth, you will have to change flywheel.

I am thinking yours should be a 9 tooth gear...but don't take that to the bank cause I am going off a very well used up memory. As Bushcat says...you gotta use the right one. I may have an old 55 starter around with a chewed up gear on it around here somewhere...if i can find it I'll count the teeth and get back with a better answer...just a Thought
