Do you use a spring on your carb float?

Engine : 1988 3.7Liter
Carb is 2 bbl Mercarb.
The new float needle and seat include a spring. There wasn't one on the old one.
The directions say that if you're flooding at idle use the spring but be aware of lean running in a high speed turn.
I had a flooding problem - but the idle needle was very worn
"Anyone ever use the spring?"
