This is a trailer boat, used about 120 hours per season and never filled up at anywhere but the same gas station I use for my truck. My truck does not have one and the boat fuel system is sealed..right? This is my second season as a boater so I still have a whole bunch to learn. Is this really necessary or just cheap insurance?

With todays E Fuels, absolutely. Your truck doesn't sit as much as your boat.

I wouldn't have a boat without one. If it didn't have one on it, I would put one on. Just make sure to get the metal screw on canister type - not the clear plexiglas ones. Those are for outboards.

Here's a post going on right now that shows the importance of one. Even with a separator, you can still have water issues... but it sure helps your chances with one!

Exact post I was reading that led me to ask the question. Is this something I can do myself? I am pretty handy with a wrench--do all my own maintainance. Is there a "how to" with pics somewhere?

No, your fuel system is NOT sealed.
Yes, you need a seperator.

Installation is pretty simple....

Ethanol absorbs water, ethanol mixes with gasoline, therefore water is in the gas. Add in the tank vent and breathing that every tank does, and you get condensation. For 25 bucks, you add the separator filter and nix the worry.
