I have a 1987 Cimmaron bowrider (which by the way, if anyone has any info on these boats I would love to hear it.....I have NEVER seen another Cimarron like mine) anyway, right in front of the engine there is an opening about 20 inches deep and about 36 inches wide, it slopes deeper as it goes back to the transom. I think this is called a spashwell, but i don't really know if it is a necessity. When the boat is in water, this area fills about half way with water. There is a plug hole at the rear of the splashwell, some people are telling me to plug the hole and some others are telling me to leave it alone. I am not talking about the hole in the bottom of the hull. The plug hole is the same size as the drain hole in the bottom of the hull.
any ideas will be appreciated. This is a link to my hompage, there is a few photos of my boat here, maybe these pictures will help.
http://www.jeepinbums.20m.com/photo2.html

Hi, Barry.

Leave the plug out. The purpose of the splashwell is to catch water that comes over the transom when backing down or from a following sea and drain it out of the hull.

:)

Just a crazy idea, but it has been known for some boats to include this as a feture for stability in the seas. The water in the boat assists by adding weight thereby lowering ther centre of gravity, thus a stable boat is achieved without you adding weight manually. Of course any water inside soon dissapears once the vessel is under way.
Just throw a teaspoon of food coulering down there and watch what happens.
Ross

J.B. has it right. Leave the plug out. I seen the picture and it looks like its sitting high enough at rtest to be dry in the splashwell. At any rate that why the call it aq splash well. Its a good design to keep water out of the boat on notched transoms.
