Dropped my lower unit for a water pump change and measured to the top of the shift rod not the center of the hole when installing my shift rod, got plenty of forward but no reverse !!! #$&)%!

Is there a way to screw the rod in a few turns without dropping the lower unit?

Thanks, Tight lines !!!

You can adjust the 60? motors shift rod without dropping the gearcase. If you have a 90? motor, get ready for some pulling and lifting.

Just think, by the time you get the shift rod in the correct position you will be an absolute expert at lower unit removal and re-assembly :D
Good Luck and I hope you get it at the first attempt.;)

Doesn't apply to your motor ... only the V4 and V6's.

Hey, I recently got that exact engine. Have not got it running well yet. Have both carbs off to rebuild and have the kits just have not done it yet. Let me know how it goes. I have not got to the LU yet so cant help you there.

Hey Samo-ott....Awesome engine runs like a tank, yup drop the lower unit and put in a new water pump and see what else is going on down there.I did and was glad, other than the shift rod issue, replaced the water pump, exhaust gasket and drive shaft housing (which came as an assy. so dont buy the oil seals and save the shims) easy enough to work on and when in doubt its usually cheaper to buy a new part than $90/hr for a mechanic.
Check my threads too..drop me a line and if I can help I will

Nice rig bet she flies............
